Gallery 9 welcomes the month of romance with colorful and vibrant paintings by Douglas Selley Byrd. Opening at Gallery Walk on February 4, Selley celebrates the beauty of flowers with meticulous detail, his style inspired by Monet, Van Gogh and Seurat, among other Impressionists.
A native of the Olympic Peninsula, Selley came back to Port Townsend six years ago, after spending nearly 10 years in Costa Rica painting landscapes. The influence of that tropical environment is visible in a new piece entitled, “Wedding Bells”. Lush green foliage surrounds orchid-like flowers, with texture bringing out the nuance of petal and leaf.
Doug Selley has been painting for over 28 years and is a long time member of Gallery 9. He paints with a slow and careful style, allowing the paintings to emerge from tiny impasto brushstrokes that reveal colorful detail and eventually building into large scale imagery.
Join Doug Selley in discussing his work during Gallery Walk, Saturday, February 4, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., at Gallery 9, 1012 Water Street, in Port Townsend. See gallery-9.com or call 379-8881 for more information.
