Gallery 9’s February featured artist, painter Michael Hale, brings his imagination to the canvas in a new painting he is revealing this month during Gallery Walk.
Hale is known for his large-scale landscape paintings he calls “e-scapes”, named for the epic feeling that includes fantastic color, rolling vistas and trees. His work has also regularly featured the theme of the nude, painting the figure in classical scenes reminiscent of Maxfield Parrish and Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema.
For the new painting, entitled “Playing in the Innersphere”, Hale has joined the e-scape and the classical figurative theme in a dream-like vision of flying nudes, a flying pig and an inscrutable cat in a fantasy landscape. His inspiration for the piece came from listening to a radio program that was describing a scene from the dramatic book “The Master and Margarita” by Mikhail Bulgakov… although Hale says, that was merely the catalyst for the painting’s flight of imagination, where gravity doesn’t exist. Hale says, “For years I have had the dream to paint the flying nude. And, in contrast to the current climate of sexual mistrust, I wanted to return to the celebration of the nude, as artists have always done.”
Hale works on his paintings for a long time, starting with sketches that he then scans and refines on his computer. The composition and the details evolve as he moves from drawing to the computer and back to drawing, then finally, painting on the canvas. He grew up studying architecture because he enjoys the technical exactitude of the craft, and brings that clarity to his fine art. He says, “I enjoy seeing how I can pull it off, how I can use my training to be tight and realistic.”
In addition to the new painting, Hale will be showing other e-scape works and also his familiar and well-loved Port Townsend maritime scenes.
