Featured artist Ann Arscott’s new oil paintings celebrate the way the sun shows up in our world. Arscott’s “Sun Effects” theme explores light on water, on mountains, in shadows, on trees, on foliage. As spring approaches, Arscott’s new paintings remind us of the returning warmth of the sun.
Arscott gets her inspiration from the natural beauty she encounters on her annual global travels. This year’s adventures included Australia, New Zealand and the South Seas. A new painting entitled “Milford Sound” was inspired by a play of light on the dramatic waterway in New Zealand.
One of Gallery 9’s long time artist members, Arscott says, ultimately her creative sources come from inside and outside. “We are there and we are living it. I take the paintings to where I want them to go from my imagination, none of it is ever literal.” Arscott cites the atmospheric paintings of impressionist J.M.W. Turner as an influence in her style, and here in Port Townsend she studied with Diane Ainsworth.
Join Ann Arscott in discussing her work during Gallery Walk, Saturday, March 4, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., at Gallery 9, 1012 Water Street, in Port Townsend. See gallery-9.com or call 379-8881 for more information.
